Description
A fine example of a late 17th Century / early 18th Century Dutch copper chafing-dish, also known as a brazier....it would have been used to keep a kettle, serving platter, food or simply plates hot, by filling the centre with hot charcoal or embers from the down-hearth fire and then it is brought to the table...this lovely piece of early metalware has an attractive flower /fruit central pattern....(unusual for such a domestic item), pleasing shaped legs which terminate with ball feet and decorative ropework pattern to the top of the rim....I always like to see the rolled copper rivets....a great help in dating these early pieces and it is always a sign of quality when you have an attractive turned fruitwood handle....very good natural patina and has done well to have survived in such excellent condition.
