Antique Eberhard & Co. Pocket Watch. 18K Gold with Minute Repeater. Switzerland, ca.1890
This antique Eberhard & Co. pocket watch, made in Switzerland around 1890, is a high grade watch in solid 18K gold that stands out for its excellent preservation and for the quality of its minute repeater. The case, profusely hand engraved, shows very defined floral motifs that cover both the back lid and the rim, with homogeneous and well executed workmanship. The result is an elegant, solid piece, representative of late nineteenth century Swiss watchmaking.
When opening the front lid, one can see a white enamel dial in perfect condition, without cracks or visible alterations. The enamel maintains a clean and uniform surface. The Roman numerals are well proportioned and the blued Breguet style hands preserve their original colour and shape. The seconds subdial integrates naturally into the whole, providing balance and clarity of reading. The overall appearance of the dial conveys sobriety and quality.
The watch incorporates a minute repeater, activated by the pusher located around the seven o’clock position. The chiming works correctly, striking hours, quarters and minutes with a clear and well regulated sound. The inner gongs are in very good condition and the system responds firmly when activated. It is a highly valued complication in watches of this period and adds special interest to the piece.
The movement is in exceptional condition. The bridges maintain their clean finish, the jewels are well seated and no signs of oxidation or serious deterioration can be observed. The wheel train runs smoothly and the watch keeps time with good accuracy for a piece of this age. The interior reflects proper maintenance and careful use over time. No relevant defects are visible, beyond the small marks typical of its age.
This watch combines good mechanics, an exterior decorated with taste and an important complication. It is an excellent piece for a collector seeking a solid, attractive watch with technical interest. It is difficult to find examples of Eberhard & Co. from this period with minute repeater and in this level of preservation. It is a piece that can integrate perfectly into an advanced collection or become a gift of special significance for someone who appreciates classic Swiss watchmaking. Its rarity, its construction quality and the complication it incorporates make it a watch with stable value and long term appeal.

History of Eberhard & Co.
Eberhard & Co. was founded in 1887 by Georges Émile Eberhard in La Chaux-de-Fonds, one of the historic centres of Swiss watchmaking. From its early years, the manufacture clearly oriented itself toward precision and robust construction of its movements. During the final part of the nineteenth century, the firm developed calibres highly appreciated for their stability and technical quality, which allowed the house to position itself among the most respected of its time.
In these early years, Eberhard produced movements destined both for simple watches and for highly complicated pieces, including repeaters, adjusted escapements and mechanisms conceived for reliable chronometric performance. These pieces consolidated the brand’s reputation in the European and American markets.
At the beginning of the twentieth century, Eberhard participated actively in precision competitions and gained notoriety for the reliability of its movements. Later, the house would become a reference in the production of chronographs, but the pocket watches of the late nineteenth century, especially those equipped with minute repeaters, remain today some of the best examples of the firm’s original philosophy: precision, good construction and functional elegance.
