Description
This is a lovely decorative and wearable piece dating from the early years of the 20th century. Harking back to ref the Edwardian era, the belt carries full U.K. hallmarks for Birmingham 1907, with the silversmith’s mark for Arthur Joseph Mason of Hylton Street, Birmingham. As is usual with multi part silver items, the back of the buckle or clasp is fully hallmarked, and each individual section has a part hallmark. The clasp and 12 link panels each have a pierced design, with the buckle section also having chased floral detailing to the front side. The back of the buckle has a simple flattened hook to close the belt, with this spotting through the rod section of the end panel. The piece is wearable, but you’d need a typically small waist to do so, with it measuring a mere 68cm in length (just under 27 inches). The buckle part measures 4.6cm x 5.9cm, with each of the additional links or panels being 4.8cm x 3.6cm. The entire belt weighs 110g / 3.53 ozt.

declaration

condition
The condition all round is good, with no major flaws to report. Naturally, the item is well over 100 years old, and in that respect there are normal signs of use and handling, but a good all round patina and colour to the silver. The links or panels each have all articulate properly, allowing the belt to wrap around the waist, and the clasp works as it should. The silver rod on the end panel is very slightly bent from the fitting of the hook through over the years, but this is normal to see and not a fault.
