A magnificent, fine and impressive, large and rare antique Edwardian English cast sterling silver tortoise ink stand; part of our diverse collection of antique inkwells. This magnificent and rare antique Edwardian English cast sterling silver ink stand has been realistically modelled in the form of a tortoise. The large body of the ink stand has been embellished with fine details reproducing the tortoise's skin and anatomical features. This magnificent antique inkwell is fitted with an impressive hinged hallmarked sterling silver cover reflecting the shape of the tortoise's shell. The surface of the body and shell are embellished with engraved details enhancing the naturalistic components of the reptile. The cover opens to reveal a sunken well and removable glass ink liner, above the contemporary engraved initials 'C.R' and coronet; the coronet indicates the importance of the piece. The interior of the inkstand further incorporates an inset silver receptacle and a stamp box, each bearing secondary hinged covers. These versatile compartments retain the original gilding to the interior. Such large examples are rare to the market and this is the finest of its type you could hope to acquire. *Due to the nature of the reptiles features it has been determined this example replicates a tortoise; however, there are other reptile variants which may be applicable, including turtle and terrapin.
