Gentleman's large and highly impressive Elgin National Watch Co., high grade 15 jewel American railroad type Antique pocket watch with beautiful ivory porcelain dial in a very big and chunky Silveroid hermetic case. Looks to have been much loved and very well taken care of -her condition certainly reflects this. Full working order and is an excellent timekeeper (within +2/-2 minute per 24 hours) with plenty of room on the regulator (which is sat correctly in the central position) for any further fine tuning. Fully checked and serviced by my highly experienced watchmaker and is guaranteed to be 100% authentic - a timepiece to grace any collection! Dial;- Impressive and distinctive, high gloss, 'snowflake' white porcelain dial in very near mint condition - absolutely no hairlines, marks or fading and just one extremely tiny little edge of dial nibble at the 8 o'clock position which is not visible when the bezel is on. Signed clearly in bold black script; Elgin U.S.A (denoting this watch was made for the export market - usually the U.K). Big black Roman numerals with black minute markers and bold black triangular shaped 15 minute markers to chapter ring. Recessed sub dial with black Arabic numbers and black seconds chapters. Finely cut original large bright blued steel spade and whip hands and original blued steel arrow tip seconds hand all in lovely straight order. Original thick slightly domed bevel edge glass (not acrylic) in amazingly clear and bright condition with just two or 3 very short and fine little surface scratches showing under eyeglass only. Case;- The highly polished, large and chunky Silveroid (fancy name for silver nickel) hermetic case (5.7cm diameter / 8.2cm from top of bow to base, 2cm depth) is heavy (has a pleasing solid feel in the hand and total watch weight is a hefty 151.4 grams), robust and in wonderful condition (please excuse the reflections/dark shadows in the pictures, was extremely difficult to photograph) - absolutely no wear or indentations and just a few light little overall surface scratches commensurate with age and use in her 102 years service. These robust silver nickel cases where favored by the Railway men for their strength and durability. All covers (both inside and out) still retain their original high gloss mirror finish. The front bezel (which has a lovely unworn coin edge to the inner circumference) and back cover screw on and off correctly (hermetic), closing tightly (early form of waterproofing) and I have oiled the threads for years of continued smooth operation. The back cover is clearly stamped to the inside in arched fancy script; Keystone Watch Case Co. U.S.A. Guaranteed Silveroid Genuine Imitation Silver and is numbered; 210815. This number is correctly repeated to the inside back case curvette. Also carries two watch repairers service marks one of which looks to be dated; 25 (1925) and 2013. Movement;- The stem wound and set, high grade 15 ruby jewelled, full plate lever movement (Grade; 317, Model; 5, Class; 106, Model Run; 137 of 188, Size; 18) is in superb clean and bright order and has just been checked/serviced by my highly experienced watch maker. Carries the most wonderful frosted 'swirl' and 'lace' engine turning to the top plates - the detail of which remains as crisp and clear today as the day it was made. Has a compensated bi-metal balance wheel with brass balance screws and two brass meantime screws (for precision timing), blued steel over coil balance spring which is true, in the round, 'breathing' well (and has the correct Elgin V to the top coil), Moseley precision regulator (which as mentioned above is sat correctly in the central position), large ruby jewels in sunken chaton settings, diamond end stone (they are more commonly ruby), attractive engine turning to the balance cock and original matching, slightly domed steel case screws. Stamped clearly on the top plates in arched black script; Elgin Natl Watch Co. U.S.A. 15 Jewels and numbered (again in black); 22062022 - dating her to 1920. This number is correctly repeated to the bottom plate (under the dial) and to the underside of the balance cock. Balance action is absolutely tremendous in all positions (could not be any better) and is keeping excellent time with a sure, strong positive action - runs like a train. Winds extremely smoothly and fully (do not be afraid to fully wind, over-winding is the greatest horological myth!) Hand set operates smoothly and correctly - the pull up/push down action is very firm and true. Lovely un-worn original big 'onion' crown. Good original firm and un-worn large bow. Appraisal;- A very handsome and highly impressive Gentleman's top grade American timepiece which as mentioned earlier was much loved and proudly cared for by the original owner - she will make a perfect gift and a heirloom to be enjoyed by your future generations! Ready to wear or display. Will be delivered in a new presentation box as shown and be very securely and safely packed.
