Description
This is a large mid 19th Century English antique Staffordshire Pottery "Squire" Toby Jug, probably early Victorian rather than Georgian, seated on a corner chair, his right hand clasping a foaming jug of ale, his left pierced to take a church-warden's clay pipe which has however gone astray over the years. Well modelled and oozing character, this example is colourfully attired in cobalt blue coat, iron red waistcoat, and yellow pantaloons above white gaiters and black shoes. The subject, who first appeared as Toby Fillpot in a print, "The Brown Jug", published by Robert Dighton in 1761, is reputed to have been inspired by a Yorkshireman, Henry Elwes, who is said to have drunk 2,000 gallons of ale. Originally, these character jugs were provided with separate hats, which served as drinking vessels, but these are rarely found today. Unmarked as one would expect.
