A superb and highly important antique George I figured walnut bureau bookcase dating to the early 18th century, circa 1720. A rare and very strong example of the period, particularly for its beautifully figured walnut and the survival of so many original features.
The timber throughout is of outstanding quality with richly figured walnut veneers showing exceptional movement and depth. The colour and patina are quite simply outstanding with a richness and warmth that only develops over centuries, giving the piece immediate presence.
The upper section features mirrored doors retaining their original mirror plates, a rare and highly desirable feature. These enclose adjustable shelving, combining display and practical storage. Below, the fall front opens to a finely fitted interior with a central cupboard, drawers and pigeonholes. It also retains its original candle slides, designed to be pulled out to hold a candle while writing, a practical and increasingly scarce feature that adds to both authenticity and charm. These pieces were made as compact writing cabinets allowing letters, documents and writing instruments to be organised and secured, effectively serving as an early form of a home office.
The lower section provides further cupboard storage and stands on its original bracket feet, another important point of originality that is increasingly uncommon to find. The original handles also remain in place adding further to the authenticity and appeal of the piece.
The proportions are particularly elegant giving height and presence without heaviness, making it both a statement piece and highly usable within an interior.
A rare early 18th century example of English cabinet making from the George I period when walnut was at its height before the widespread use of mahogany. Pieces of this quality retaining original mirrors, handles, feet and candle slides are becoming increasingly difficult to source, especially with such exceptional colour.
