These elements combined to create a unique and visually stunning aesthetic that defined the Art Nouveau era. The adjustable arms with toleware shades cast light down onto your work via the rise and fall slide mechanism on the square pillar.  Everything is in working order and fully operational and it is in excellent condition with the expected tarnishing and oxidisation present in an item of this age and use. A Bouillotte Lamp1 is a type of antique table lamp that originates from France and is inspired by the 18th-century card game called Bouillotte. The game itself was quite popular among the French aristocracy during the Louis XVI period and sustained a following well into the century following.  It is intriguing that in essence, these lamps are named after a popular pastime of the era and are admired for their functional and elegant design. Here are a few key features of Bouillotte lamps: Design: They typically have a round or oval base, often made of brass or other metals, and are equipped with two or three candle holders. Shade: The lamp features a distinctive metal shade, which is usually adjustable. The shade can be moved up and down to control the amount of light, which is especially useful for reading or playing cards.  These lamps were used by students and are often referred to as Student Lamps. Functionality: Some Bouillotte lamps have a mechanism for holding candles and a central stem to support the shade. Modern versions might be electrified for practicality, but the design remains largely faithful to the original. The name Bouillotte comes from the card game for which these lamps were often used. The game was played on small tables, and the lamp provided the perfect amount of light to see the cards without disturbing the ambiance. The adjustable shade allowed players to control the light's intensity, preventing glare and making the game more enjoyable. The Chinese Meander Pattern and the Lion Mask became popular in French decorative design during the Art Nouveau Era for several reasons: There was increased cultural exchange between the East and West in the late 19th and early 20th Centuries and Chinese and Japanese art and motifs became more accessible and admired throughout Europe.  The aesthetic appeal of the intricate, flowing lines of the Grecian Key or Chinese Leiwen complemented the sinuous organic forms characteristic of Art Noveau design. Symbolism was another aspect which was incorporated into designs of this time to reinforce the Art Nouveau movements emphasis on nature and organic forms. The symbolism of the Leiwen, which was also known as the cloud and thunder pattern symbolized life-giving rain and abundance clearly resonated within the Art Nouveau movement. Chinese Meander Pattern or Leiwen2 The equivalent of the Grecian Key Design in Chinese design is called Leiwen (雷纹). This intricate geometric pattern consists of continuous lines that often form a repetitive key-like motif. It is a prevalent decorative element in ancient Chinese art and architecture, symbolizing eternity unity and infinity.  Both designs are beautiful examples of how different cultures can independently develop strikingly similar artistic expressions. Grecian Key or Meander Pattern A continuous line that forms a repeated motif, typically right-angled. Chinese Leiwen: Similar to the Greek key but often has more intricate shapes to convey the concept of unending continuity. Lion Mask3 The Chinese Lion Dance mask often features intricate patterns and designs, including the Meander Pattern, also known as the Grecian Key Pattern. This pattern symbolizes unity and infinity, adding depth and meaning to the vibrant and dynamic lion dance performances. The lion mask's designs are not only visually striking but also culturally significant, reflecting various auspicious symbols and elements of Chinese heritage. Symbolism: The lion has long been a symbol of strength, courage, and protection. Incorporating lion masks into decorative designs added a sense of power and majesty. Artistic Influence: The Art Nouveau movement drew inspiration from various sources, including ancient and exotic cultures. The lion mask, with its rich history and symbolism, fit well within this eclectic approach. Decorative Versatility: Lion masks could be used in a variety of decorative arts, including architecture, furniture, and jewellery, making them a versatile and popular choice for Art Nouveau designers.
