An exceptionally attractive and well-crafted French window seat in solid oak, dating to the late 19th century (c. 1870). This piece features a rare and elegant three-sided gallery back, making it an ideal choice for a window alcove, the foot of a bed, or a grand hallway.
The backrest is designed with a series of striking open-work lyre splats, providing a sophisticated silhouette. The seat is supported by four clean, tapered square-section legs, characteristic of the refined French provincial style of the period.
Condition & Patina:
The oak has developed a superb, deep honey-toned patina with a soft natural lustre. The attractive grain is beautifully figured across the seat surface.
True to its age and French origin, the piece displays some light, historic "flight holes" (dead woodworm). These are entirely dormant and common in 19th-century oak; they serve as a testament to the age and authenticity of the timber. The frame remains structurally sound, heavy, and fit for daily use.
Please see the pictures to help form the description. There are plenty of marks of age and use; the legs have had old repairs as shown by the close-up photography.
