We are delighted to have acquired and offer this magnificent antique solid silver gilt (vermeil) laurel wreath crown made in France in the 19th century.
This silver gilt crown presents a most opulent and sumptuous design, elaborate with delicacy, style, and splendour - a quintessential design of what one may imagine a laurel crown to be.
Its entirety is made of solid silver with a layer of gold on top to elevate its ornateness. A thick wire runs along its circumference to which all the leaves are attached to. The foliate motif is incredibly intricate with a lifelike design of both laurel and acorn leaves, along with some acorn and bud accents. Upon closer inspection, one can truly appreciate its delicacy with each leaf featuring branches of veins and a stippled effect within.
The front/centre of the crown features a wonderful bow/ribbon that ties in the overall design and acts as a focal point in all of its ornateness.
Laurel leaf crowns typically symbolise victory, triumph and honour and during the 19th century, such pieces were likely for honorary gifts/awards or as a commemorative present.
Its diameter is rather generous and is very impressive upon wearing and fits upto a gentleman's M/L head size.
An excellent and exemplary piece of fine and decorative French 19th c. silver gilt wear, ideal for collections, displays or perhaps on the odd occasion for special modelling/reproduction purposes.
Two small French hallmarks (boar's head and a small maker's mark) are present on the left-hand side of the ribbon drape.

condition
Fair Condition - The crown is in fair antique condition, however suffers losses of leaves and damage in some areas. Whilst not very apparent upon a quick glance due to its overlapping design, a fair amount of leaves have either come off or have sustained damage. It is a very delicate piece and unfortunately has suffered over time and as such we would recommend handling (especially wearing) with utmost care and is priced as such. There are one or two leaves that have come off but have been slotted in between others which hold but will come off if mishandled.
