Description
Fine and impressive antique George IV English sterling silver quart tankard; an addition to our silver tankard collection. This exceptional antique George IV sterling silver quart tankard has a baluster form onto a plain spreading circular foot. The tankard is embellished with original chased floral, leaf and scroll decoration incorporating a scene depicting two birds in a rural setting. The body of this tankard is further ornamented with two scrolling leaf bordered shaped cartouches; the cartouche to one side displays a bright cut engraved crest of a demi-lion rampant. The cartouche to the other side of the tankard displays a coat of arms of a saltire with roundel, above three bars wavy*. This antique George IV tankard retains the original hinged hallmarked domed cover surmounted with a shaped pierced decorated thumbpiece. The cover is encircled with chased floral and foliage decoration accented with a stylised motif to the upper portion. The hinge is decorated with pendant drop style ornamentation. The interior of this exceptional tankard retains the original gilding. This large quart** tankard is fitted with a fine opposing scroll handle ornamented with a scroll terminals and impressive scrolling leaf decoration. The circular foot is encircled with bands of tooled decoration. * These arms are a variant of the family of Watlington, of Caldicot Hill, Aldenham in the County of Hertfordshire. This antique quart tankard is an exceptional gauge of silver, exceptional quality and in exceptional presentation condition. The chased decoration is very sharp. Full hallmarks struck to the surface of the body and part hallmarks to the cover are all very clear.
