Description
A fine quality Antique George III period 8 day longcase clock by James Field of Hempstead, dating to circa 1785. The clock features a beautifully engraved silvered brass arched dial signed “James Field, Hempstead”, housed within an elegant London-type mahogany case with striking flame mahogany veneers.
The substantial five pillar movement is of excellent quality and is complemented by the attractive silvered brass dial with Roman numerals, subsidiary seconds dial, calendar aperture and finely engraved scrolling decoration. The beautifully proportioned mahogany case features an arched hood with shaped pediment, brass finials, brass mounted fluted columns, glazed side panels to the hood allowing the movement to be viewed from an angle, panelled trunk door and a richly figured flame mahogany base.
This impressive longcase clock has an interesting historical association, being reputed to have come from Gaddesden Place at Water End, Hertfordshire, a notable Georgian country house. The clock is signed by James Field of Hempstead, an 18th century Hertfordshire clockmaker, and represents the quality of craftsmanship associated with the furnishing of important Georgian homes.
The clock is presented in excellent condition, retaining a wonderful warm colour and aged patina throughout, with historic marks and signs of age commensurate with its long history. The movement is in good working order.
A rare opportunity to acquire a signed Georgian longcase clock by a named maker, with an attractive provenance story and a fine quality mahogany case.

Condition / Servicing Note:
Please note that antique clocks are complex and sensitive mechanical objects. While some clocks may be running at the time of listing we cannot guarantee ongoing performance without a full inspection and testing period by our specialist horologist. Where inspection, testing, or servicing is required this process can take between 2–12 weeks depending on the clock, the work needed, and current workload. This careful approach helps ensure the clock is properly assessed rather than rushed.
Clock Warranty:
All clocks purchased from London City Antiques are supplied with a 12-month warranty from the date of purchase.
This warranty covers mechanical faults and failures arising from normal use. It does not extend to damage resulting from improper handling, unauthorised tampering, accidental or physical damage, environmental factors (including humidity, temperature fluctuations, or exposure to direct sunlight), or misuse.
Should a clock develop a genuine fault within the warranty period that meets the above conditions, we will, at our discretion and at no cost to you, arrange for the repair or replacement of any defective parts. All remedial work will be carried out by a fully qualified and experienced horologist.
In the unlikely event that a fault cannot be satisfactorily resolved, a full refund will be offered.
