Description
A most attractive and very unusual Victorian moulded glass stand fitted with a quality aneroid barometer No 7026 by Negretti & Zambra c1890. Aneroid barometer having 3½" silvered and die struck dial, the upper part calibrated in inches of mercury with a range from 28″ – 31″ and divided to 1/10ths", standard meteorological terms. The lower part with semi circular thermometer set to a register calibrated in degrees Fahrenheit with a range from 20° – 130°. Signed to the centre by the maker "Negretti & Zambra, London" with serial no. "7026." Blued steel pointer, bevelled glass and gilt index. Conventional Vidi pattern movement driven from a single 1¼" capsule tensioned in a C spring. The whole contained within a bright plated cylinder fitted to the glass surround, circular back plate affording access to calibration port. The glass case detailed with classical heads and winged beasts, set on a faceted plinth. Condition: The subject of a full overhaul and restoration of lacquered finish. Tested and calibrated under laboratory conditions, see performance chart. The barometer working exceptionally well with a superb level of accuracy across the full standard barometric range. In generally very good condition, minor chips to glass at barometer bezel and one to lower lefthand mount. The bezel and back plate re-lacquered, the barometer dial with some changes over lacquer, though appearing crisp and easy to read. Comments: A first, and very unusual. Presumably these were made in very small numbers and, no doubt owing to the fragility of the glass, very few have survived. The aesthetics are strong, and the contrast between the various surface finishes of the glass nicely reflecting texture and detail. A piece that would fit nicely into many settings, unusual enough to be a perpetual conversation piece. A lot for the collector and connoisseur alike.
