ANTIQUE GRAND TOUR SOLID BRASS RECUMBENT LION PAPERWEIGHT

A charming antique solid brass Grand Tour paperweight, modelled as a recumbent lion resting upon a rectangular integral plinth. The lion is particularly well modelled for its small scale, with a wonderfully expressive face, substantial flowing mane, muscular body and curled tail. The figure has been cast in relief and retains an attractive warm golden brass surface with areas of natural age-related patination. Lion imagery was particularly popular amongst Grand Tour and classical revival souvenirs, representing strength, courage and nobility. Small bronzes and brass models such as this were produced as decorative desk objects and souvenirs, particularly during the late Victorian and Edwardian periods. The substantial brass construction gives the piece sufficient weight to function as a desk paperweight, while its diminutive scale makes it an appealing cabinet or desk collectible. The underside has subsequently been fitted with black felt, protecting the surface on which it is displayed.
