An English, ebonised mahogany and brass parcel gilt height adjustable Aspidistra or fruiting vine planter in Aesthetic Movement taste, dating to the late Victorian period, circa 1885. Exceptional example of parcel gilt decoration and delightfully adjustable. Presents a desirable aged patina and in gently time-worn antique order. Deep ebonised tones accentuate the turned and collared frame and circular base. Gilt detail adds a distinguished contrast with warm golden hues. Glazed ceramic planter dish adorned with hand-painted foliate relief. Set upon a rising pole, activated with a rare and pleasing push lever action. Fully extended, the planter sits at a height of 6' 3'' - ideal for suspending trailing vines. Inner diameter narrows to a minimum of 4'' giving potential for hosting larger candles. Bead and shell detail adorns the fluted support stand in colourful ceramic bulbs. Acanthus bulb and broad leaf accents further establish the strong foliate motif.
