Antique Kazak Carpet

This is a good example of a hand woven Kazak carpet from the Central Caucasus, dating from around 1890. The carpet has a typical geometric design with three stepped and hooked medallions surrounded by tribal and zoomorphic motifs. It has harshang borders of palmettes and serrated leaves and is flanked by skittle guard stripes and barber poles. The colour palette is very appealing with a rich indigo field and quite bold red, gold, green and ivory featuring. This is an excellent example in great condition bearing in mind it is about 135 years old. It has a nice low even pile and good ends and selvedges. The carpet measures 205 cms by 114 cms.
