Antique Kodak 616 Model C Camera. Compur Anastigmat. Germany, 1938–1939
Antique Kodak 616 Model C Camera. Compur Anastigmat. Germany, 1938–1939.
Magnificent Kodak 616 Model C camera, manufactured in Germany by Kodak A.G. (Nagel-Werk, Stuttgart) between 1938 and 1939. This is one of the most refined versions of the Six-16 series, recognizable by its distinctive Art Deco design with geometric chrome lines, faceted corners, and a high-gloss black lacquered metal body.
This European version stands out for being equipped as standard with the German Compur shutter, made by F. Deckel (Munich), a true masterpiece of optical and mechanical engineering of its time. The shutter offers speeds up to 1/250 s, ensuring precise and smooth exposure, superior to most contemporary American shutters. The set is completed with the Kodak Anastigmat f/4.5 lens, highly luminous, perfectly aligned, and free from haze or wear.
The bellows, made of black leather with original texture, are perfectly preserved, without cracks or light leaks. The camera opens and closes smoothly, maintaining the solidity and precision typical of German manufacturing. All mechanical controls function correctly, although it has not been tested with film.
For its aesthetic elegance, smooth operation, and excellent condition, this Kodak 616 Model C Compur is an ideal piece both for collection and as a decorative gift. Its balance between design, engineering, and finish makes it one of the most attractive cameras of the European Art Deco era.
Measurements: 18 × 8.5 cm (7 × 3.35 in).
History of the Kodak 616 Model C
The Kodak 616 Model C was introduced in 1938 as the successor to the American Kodak Six-16. Manufactured in Germany at the Nagel Werk factory, founded by Dr. August Nagel, creator of the famous Retina, it represented the perfect union between international Art Deco design and German precision.
The version equipped with a Compur shutter and Kodak Anastigmat f/4.5 lens was the most advanced of the model, offering superior exposure control and remarkable optical quality. The angular lines and metallic details of the casing make it a benchmark of Art Deco aesthetics applied to photographic technology.
Today, the Kodak 616 Model C cameras manufactured in Stuttgart are especially sought after by collectors due to their refinement, combining the best of Kodak design with German mechanical excellence.
