Antique Long Case Clock by Nathaniel Hedge of Colchester
A late 18th-century English longcase clock by the Colchester clockmaker Nathaniel Hedge, dating to circa 1790.
The clock is housed in a well-proportioned Georgian mahogany case with a flat-top hood and glazed door, flanked by turned columns. The long trunk door is fitted with a shaped and inlaid panel, above a stepped plinth base. The mahogany shows attractive figuring and a warm, well-developed patina, with colour and surface wear consistent with age.
The brass square dial is finely engraved and fitted with cast spandrels to the corners. It features a silvered chapter ring with Roman numerals and outer minute track, pierced steel hands, a subsidiary seconds dial, and a date aperture. The centre of the dial is engraved “Nat. Hedge, Colchester.”
The clock is fitted with an eight-day, weight-driven movement, striking the hours on a bell. The movement is of good quality provincial construction, with brass plates, turned pillars,
