Antique Miniature Photograph of Queen Victoria

Original turn of the century, small circular portrait photograph of Queen Victoria, presented in a deep, ebonised wooden frame with glass front. Photograph is approx 6cm in diameter. Frame is approx 10cm in diameter. The image itself appears to be possibly an albumen print, softly toned in sepia, showing the Queen in later life. She is depicted in profile, wearing a lace widow’s cap and dark mourning dress with a heavy shawl an instantly recognisable mode of dress she adopted following the death of Prince Albert in 1861. Her expression is solemn and introspective, which aligns with the widely circulated photographic portraits of her long widowhood. Devotional quality, these pieces were frequently kept on mantelpieces or hung in domestic interiors as tokens of loyalty or remembrance. The publisher’s mark for The London Stereoscopic Company, with addresses at Cheapside and Regent Street, places the production firmly in the latter half of the 19th century. This company was one of the most prominent photographic publishers of the Victorian era, responsible for distributing popular cartes-de-visite and stereoscopic views, including official and semi-official images of the royal family. Classic Victorian royal portrait piece, both decorative and sentimental—combining mass produced photography with the more personal presentation of a framed miniature.
