Penderyn Antiques

Penderyn Antiques are a family run business residing in an old Welsh chapel in the heart of the Brecon Beacons National Park. We source and restore a wide range of furniture, antiques, interiors and collectables. We have no specific style that we adhere to, (if we like it, we’ll buy it!) but we do have a keen interest in early Welsh country furniture and unusual decorative items.
At Penderyn Antiques, we express an indebtedness to those nameless joiners who worked with wood so long ago before plastics and the age of automation. For in building furniture with integrity; so that it will last hundreds of years, they have been our mentors. Their work remains a testament to their commitment to their craft and excellence. Wood is the most used of all our natural resources. We have a duty to recycle, reuse, adapt and preserve it. We must use wood to create furniture that has longevity and combat the ‘throwaway’ society…even though it does grow on trees..”

Description
A handsome antique oak mule chest of traditional form. The chest features a moulded three-panel front above two drawers, all retaining attractive period brass handles and escutcheons. The rich oak has developed a wonderful depth of colour and patina, with pleasing grain throughout. The hinged lid lifts to reveal a spacious storage compartment. Raised on shaped bracket feet, this is a characterful and versatile country oak piece.

condition
In good antique condition throughout with signs of age and use commensurate with its age. There is surface wear in places including age-related marks, scratches and knocks. The interior shows evidence of historic worm activity, which is long inactive and treated as a precaution, along with some associated losses and wear to the internal rail and lid hinge area (pictured). There is also some wear and minor losses to the moulded edges and feet, together with historic shrinkage and movement to the oak boards, all typical of a piece of this age. The mule chest remains structurally solid, sturdy, and ready for use.
Our experienced carpenter thoroughly inspects, repairs, and restores each item in our collection to ensure it is fully prepared for use in your home.
