Description
(All text, heading, information and photographs within this listing are the intellectual property and copyright of; riversidemaximus23.) Antique Gentleman's original American Waltham Watch Co., high grade 15 jewel pocket watch with beautiful ivory porcelain dial in a highly polished 10 carat (stamped) rose gold filled (has a lovely soft pink hue and is known in the Uk as rolled gold) Dennison/Waltham half hunter case with the rarer Royal Blue enamel numerals to front cover. C ~1906. Looks to have been much loved and very well cared for - her condition certainly reflects this. Full working order and is an excellent timekeeper (within +2/-2 minute per 24 hours) with plenty of room on the regulator (which is sat correctly in the central position) for any further fine tuning. Fully checked and serviced by my highly experienced watchmaker and is guaranteed to be 100% authentic - a timepiece to grace any Collection! Dial;- Impressive and distinctive, high gloss, 'snowflake' white porcelain dial in very near mint condition - absolutely no marks or nibbles and just one extremely feint little hairline from centre to number 11 (so tiny is not showing up in the photographs, not visible to the naked eye but mentioning for accuracy). Bold black Roman numerals with black minute markers, bolder five minute markers and black triangular shaped 15 minute markers to chapter ring. Recessed sub dial with black Arabic numbers and black seconds chapters. Finely cut, original rose gold double spade and whip hands (so allowing for easy time check through the front cover) and original blued steel steel arrow tip seconds hand all in lovely straight order. Hunter crystal and slightly domed original port hole outer glass both in good order with some light and fine little surface scratches commensurate with Age. Case;- The highly polished (5cm diameter / 6.9cm from top of bow to base), 10 carat (stamped) rose gold filled case is heavy (has a pleasing solid feel in the hand and total watch weight is a hefty 106.7 grams), robust and in wonderful condition (please excuse the reflections / dark shadows in the pictures - was extremely difficult to photograph), with just one very small indentation to back cover (only visible if caught in the right light), tiny bit of pocket wear to case circumference between the hinges and twelve - 1, same to front and back of stem and overall very light and fine little surface scratches (usually caused by carrying the watch in a pocket with loose coins and other heavy objects jangling around) commensurate with age and use in her 115 years service. All covers (both inside and out) still retain their original, high gloss, mirror finish. The front cover carries the rarer large Royal blue Roman numerals to centre (they are more commonly black) which are in outstanding condition with no chips or damage (as is the dark blue enamel to the inner and outer chapter rings), opens correctly to exactly 90 degrees when the winder is depressed, closing tightly with a very reassuring click (always depress the winder when closing to save wear to the gold and also the catch) and the large hinge is true and firm with absolutely no play. Clearly numbered to the inside; 203071 xx. The back cover and dust cover are again hinged at the 9 position - both open correctly to a fraction over 90 degrees, closing tightly with a very reassuring click and both hinges are also true and firm with just a micro bit of play to the outer hinge. Clearly stamped to the inside of the back cover; Moon Trade Mark (the 'Moon' cases were always 10ct gold filled) A.L.D. Dennison Watch Case Co., (Aaron Lufkin Dennison - one of the founding Fathers of the American Waltham Watch Company who moved to England to establish the Dennison case factory. They made cases for all the leading watch manufacturers of the era including Rolex and Omega) and carries to centre their trade symbols of a crescent moon, star and sun with the rarer Waltham fish symbol (with a capital letter W within), which is stamped around in arched script; American Waltham Watch Company. Correctly numbered again; 203071 and carries a service mark which is neatly placed to the inner circumference near the hinge. The dust cover (which has a few light surface scratches to the inside - looks like some one once tested it to see if solid gold) is clearly stamped; English Make Guaranteed To Be Made Of Two Plates Of 10ct Gold With Plate Of Composition Between And To Wear 20 Years. Clearly numbered; 203071 9 F - the 9 is the Dennison date numbering system 1909 (which shows the movement is original to the case - it should always be dated later or the same, never before) and the F is the first letter of the surname of the goldsmith at the Dennison factory who pinned the case joints, I have been able to identify him; E.A.Furneaux. Again carries an old and very feint service mark which looks to be dated; 39 (1939) The case number is correctly partially repeated to the back case cuvette and the inside of the bezel lip; 071. Movement;- The stem wound and set, high grade 15 ruby jewelled lever movement (Grade; No.620, Model; 1899, 16 size, Style; Htg) is in superb bright and clean order and as mentioned above has just been fully checked and serviced. Carries the most wonderful frosted 'ribbon' and 'lace' engine turning to the top plates with a beautiful 'daisy' flower radiating from the centre wheel pivot and attractive 'fish scale' engine turning to the bottom plate (always a sign of quality) - the detail of all remains as crisp and clear today as the day they were made. Has a compensated bi-arm balance with brass balance screws and two red gold meantime screws (for precision timing), bright blued steel over-coil Breguet balance spring which is true, in the round (and 'breathing' well), large ruby jewels in sunken red gold screwed in chaton settings, ruby end stone, ruby pallets jewels, Church micro regulator (which as mentioned above is sat correctly in the central position), attractive frosted 'ribbon' engine turning to the mainspring and ratchet barrel covers and highly polished steel case screws. Clearly stamped to the top plates in arched black Gothic script; A.W.W.Co. Waltham, Mass. 15 Jewels and is numbered in black; 14755984 - dating her to 1906. Balance action is absolutely tremendous in all positions (could not be any better) and is keeping excellent time with a sure, strong positive action. Takes a very long and smooth wind (do not be afraid to fully wind, over-winding is the greatest horological myth!) Runs for well over 24 hours on a full wind. Hand set operates smoothly and correctly - the pull up/push down action is very firm and true. Lovely large original un-worn rose gold filled 'onion' crown. Good original firm bow which has a tiny bit of wear to top underside from being carried on a watch chain over the Years. Appraisal;- A very handsome and highly impressive Gentleman's Antique Waltham half hunter timepiece which as mentioned above was much loved and very well cared for by the original owner - she will make a perfect gift and a heirloom to be enjoyed by your future generations! Ready to wear or display. Will be delivered in a new presentation box as shown and be very securely and safely packed.
