A superb long solid sterling silver antique Albert watch chain and fob, the chain being long enough to wear as a collar around the neck. The fob consists of a sterling silver South African shilling dated to 1897, the last year the coin was minted, set into a silver and glass mount hallmarked for Chester 1901. The silversmiths mark of D&Co. is also stamped on the mount, for Edward Durban & Co of Frederick Street, Birmingham. The chain is unmarked but tests as 900 or higher grade silver, while the T bar has a stamp but not one I recognise, the chain and bar being possibly South African rather than English.
Agatha Hamster Antiques has clarified that the Antique Silver Albert Watch Chain and Enameled 1897 South African Shilling Fob in Silver Mount, 15 Inch (LA225178) is genuinely of the period declared with the date/period of manufacture being 1901
Condition: Excellent, with no damage to the silver chain, T bar or dog clip fastener. The enameling on the coin is intact, while the coin itself has only minor surface oxidisation. The glass to the front and back of the coin mount are is intact with no cracks or chips and only light surface scratching.
