Antique sterling silver 'Mizpah' ring, dating to the very end of the Victorian or early Edwardian period. Mizpah as a word was first used in jewellery design around the 1850s. Meaning 'Lord watch over me' it came to represent an emotional relationship and was often used on jewellery given as a token of affection to a loved one, allowable even during the strict Victorian rules of courtship. It was also seen as a talisman to keep an absent partner safe while away and bring them home again. Condition: Excellent, very light age wear only. Marked 'silver' inside, tested as sterling. Size: UK ring size N, USA 6 1/2", Width at widest point 7mm
