Antique Solid Silver Cigar Box or Case - France c.1900

Elegant antique silver cigar box, made in France around 1900 and intended for the export market. It is a solid, well proportioned piece with strong visual presence, crafted in white silver with visible remains of its original gilding, now partially preserved in a very harmonious way. This slight wear to the gilding is the only noticeable sign of use and does not detract from the piece at all. On the contrary, it reinforces its authenticity. The box features very rich and carefully executed decoration, carried out with great precision. On one side there is an engraved scene depicting a village landscape, where a river crossed by a bridge can be clearly seen, with buildings in the background. The engraving is fine and detailed, with a good sense of depth and a balanced composition. The opposite side is centered on a shield with the engraved initials “JJ”, surrounded by abundant vegetal ornamentation composed of acanthus leaves, foliage and floral motifs that cover almost the entire surface. The contour of the box is also decorated, with mouldings and engraved details that enhance the sense of decorative continuity. On the side, the French Mercury head hallmark is preserved, used on silver intended for export in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, clearly visible. The interior is original to the period and is in excellent condition. It is divided into two compartments, specifically designed to hold cigars, and retains a firm structure, with no deformations or significant wear. The clasp works perfectly, with a secure and precise fastening, ensuring reliable use. The box has not been restored or polished, retaining its natural patina and all of its original character. It is a piece that fits perfectly into a collection of antique silverware, or as an occasional functional object for those who appreciate period craftsmanship and quality.
