Description
Antique Solid Silver Pocket Watch, Signed Mazzantini, Switzerland ca. 1890 This splendid Swiss silver pocket watch, dated circa 1890 and signed on the dial as Mazzantini, perfectly embodies the sober and imposing elegance of late 19th century Swiss watchmaking. With its impressive size of 55 mm, the piece conveys a majestic presence and a timeless charm that captivates instantly, offering the collector a magnificent combination of refined aesthetics and mechanical robustness. Its fully hallmarked case, preserved in excellent condition, displays elaborate engravings on all covers and on the band, along with a central shield intended for initials, maintaining the decorative harmony typical of Swiss watch case craftsmanship. The enamel dial, flawless and free of cracks, draws attention through the purity of its surface and the fineness of its design. It presents bold Roman numerals, an outer minute track in red and a seconds subdial at six o’clock that operates with elegance and precision. The skeletonised hands in a coppery tone, delicately crafted, add a romantic late-Victorian air that enhances the personality of the piece. Every element of the dial reflects an aesthetic care that remains surprisingly fresh despite its more than 130 years. One of the most appealing features is the magnificent dust cover, entirely engraved with geometric motifs and undulating ornaments, accompanied by French inscriptions that describe its qualities: Aiguille Indépendante, 15 Rubis, Remontoir, Mazzantini Genève, Nº 66714. These inscriptions, common among quality watches of the period, summarise some of its essential functions. Aiguille Indépendante indicates that the watch has an independent seconds hand located in its own subdial, a highly appreciated feature at the time because it allowed a more precise reading of the seconds. 15 Rubis refers to the number of synthetic jewels used in the movement as bearings to reduce friction and wear. The more jewels a movement has, the smoother and more durable it becomes. Remontoir indicates that the watch is wound by crown rather than by key, a modern system for the period that offered comfort and reliability to the user. This level of detail confirms an object aimed at a demanding customer and reveals the manufacturer’s intention to position it in an upper category within the accessible watchmaking of the era. The movement, protected by a crystal, a luxury found only in higher-end models, is an excellent example of the so-called improved Roskopf system. Although it derives from the architecture of the Roskopf system, it stands far above its basic versions thanks to the presence of 15 jewels, a Swiss lever escapement, a balance wheel with screws, separate bridges and fine perlage on the plate. These enhancements place it in that superior category so appreciated by today’s collectors. It is robust, reliable, well finished and faithful to the practical spirit of the original system, yet with a notable leap in quality and precision. The layout of the wheel train and the configuration of the bridge correspond exactly to movements produced between 1885 and 1905. The condition of the mechanism is excellent. It is clean, free of oxidation, well adjusted and running smoothly. This watch will look beautiful in a collection dedicated to nineteenth-century Swiss watchmaking, not only for its historical elegance and character but also for the unique personality it brings through its artisanal details and the silent magnetism of its presence. It is an irresistible piece both for its refined aesthetics and for its optimised mechanics, capable of conveying a special serenity when held in the hands, as if it shared with its new owner an intimate fragment of lived time. Its feel, its balanced weight and the gentle sound of its ticking awaken an authentic emotion that connects immediately with those who love objects with soul. It is an extraordinary gift for someone special because it is not only a watch that is being given but also history, memory and beauty. It is a deeply meaningful acquisition for any lover of antique watchmaking because it touches the sensitive fibre and brings that sense of fulfilment that only arises when adding to the collection a truly exceptional piece. History of the Late Nineteenth-Century Swiss Pocket Watch: At the end of the nineteenth century, the Swiss watch industry underwent a decisive transformation that combined artisanal tradition, technical improvements and broader-scale production. During this period, pocket watches became essential items for both professionals and private individuals, and the European market demanded robust, reliable pieces with a refined aesthetic. This led to the emergence of intermediate mechanisms, known as “improved Roskopf” movements, which balanced constructive simplicity with notable improvements in accuracy and finishing. This type of calibre arose as a response to the success of the original Roskopf system, designed to offer affordable yet functional watches. However, Swiss workshops soon saw the opportunity to raise its quality by adding more jewels, incorporating lever escapements and refining decorative aspects. Within this context flourished distributors such as Mazzantini, merchants based in Geneva or other Swiss cities who supplied specialised manufacturers and signed the dials themselves to reach a broader public. This explains why many watches from the period display commercial names instead of manufacturer brands, a detail that today adds historical interest and documentary value. Watches with richly engraved 0.800 silver cases were a common option for clients who wanted an elegant object without reaching the much higher prices of haute horlogerie. The development of these watches coincided with a time when precision was becoming a standard of quality, driving improvements in crown-winding systems, the appearance of independent seconds hands and the increasing incorporation of jewels in movements. To own a watch of this type today is to preserve an important chapter in watchmaking evolution, a testimony to innovation, dedication and artisanal excellence that shaped Switzerland’s identity as the world capital of watchmaking.
