Antique Thos Russell Pocket Watch 1920s Swiss 10 Jewel Silver Plated Case Fwo

Antique Gentleman's large and highly impressive 'Thos Russell & Son' high grade 10 jewel Swiss lever pocket watch with beautiful ivory porcelain dial (Tempus Fugit) in a very chunky and extremely ornate original rare silver plated large 'Russell' stepped case (they are more commonly gold filled). Looks to have been much loved and very well taken care of - her condition certainly reflects this. Full working order and is an excellent timekeeper (within +2/-2 minute per 24 hours) with plenty of room on the regulator (which is sat correctly in the central position) for any further fine tuning. Fully checked, serviced and a new mainspring fitted by my highly experienced watchmaker and is guaranteed to be 100% authentic - a timepiece to grace any collection! Dial;- Impressive and distinctive high gloss, 'snowflake' white double sunk porcelain dial in very near mint condition - absolutely no hairlines or marks and just one extremely tiny edge of dial repair at the 2 o'clock position which is not visible with the bezel on. Signed clearly in bold black arched script; Thos Russell & Son Tempus Fugit (time flys) Liverpool and has their Trade symbol of a winged water wheel below and signed in black arched script to base of sub dial; Swiss Made. Big black Roman numerals with black minute markers, bolder black 5 minute markers and diamond shaped 15 minute markers to chapter ring. Large recessed sub dial with black Arabic numbers and black seconds chapters. Finely cut, original large bright blued steel spade and whip hands and original blued steel arrow tip seconds hand all in lovely straight, unmarked order. Very thick bevel edge glass (not acrylic) which has many overall light little surface scratches but as original I have decided not to change it to keep the character intact. Case;- The highly polished and extremely ornate original chunky silver plated 18 size 'Russell' stepped case (5.3cm diameter / 7.5cm from top of bow to base, 1.4cm depth excluding the glass) is heavy (has a pleasing solid feel in the hand and total watch weight is a hefty 115.4 grams), robust and in wonderful condition (please excuse the reflections/dark shadows in the pictures, was extremely difficult to photograph) - absolutely no wear, one very tiny (micro) indentation to edge of back cover at the 9 position (so small is not showing up in the photographs, does not detract but mentioning for accuracy) and just a few light little overall surface scratches commensurate with age and use in her 100+ years service. All covers (both inside and out) still retain their original, high gloss, mirror finish. The stepped front bezel snaps on and off correctly, closing tightly with a very reassuring click. The stepped back cover and dust cover are hinged at the 6 position, both open correctly to exactly 90 degrees, again closing tightly and the large hinges are true and firm with absolutely no play. Beautifully adorned to the case circumference with a slightly raised, totally un-worn, highly attractive decoration of leaves, flowers and scroll work. The back cover carries a Victorian style belt and buckle design to centre with a fancy, un-engraved shield shaped cartouche within. Clearly stamped to the inside in very fancy arched script; The "Russell" Model Illinois Watch Case Co. Elgin U.S.A. and is numbered; 5887157. Also carries two old watch repairers service marks and a tiny bit of scratching - looks like some one once tested it to see if solid silver. The inside of the dust cover is clearly stamped in arched script; This Case Guaranteed To Be Made Of Two Plates Of Solid Silver With Plate Of Composition Between And To Wear 20 Years Numbered again; 5887157 and this is also repeated correctly to the back case curvette. Movement;- The stem wound and set high grade 10 ruby jewelled, 3/4 plate Swiss lever movement is in superb clean and bright order and has just been checked/serviced/new mainspring fitted by my highly experienced watch maker. Carries very attractive 'wavy' engine turning to the top plates (the detail of which remains as crisp and clear today as the day they were made) and has a solid bi-arm balance with red gold balance screws and two red gold meantime screws (for precision timing), blued steel over coil balance spring which is true, in the round and 'breathing' well, large ruby jewels in sunken chaton settings, ruby end stone, ruby pallet jewels, 'swirl' engine turning to the mainspring and ratchet barrel covers and original matching steel case screws. Stamped clearly on the top plates in arched black script; Thos Russell & Son Liverpool Swiss Made 10 Jewels and is numbered (again in black); 18953. Also numbered on the bottom plate (under the dial); 758 and to the underside of the balance cock; 567. Balance action is absolutely tremendous in all positions (could not be any better) and is keeping excellent time with a sure, strong positive action - runs like a train. Winds extremely smoothly and fully (do not be afraid to fully wind, over-winding is the greatest horological myth!) Hand set operates smoothly and correctly - the pull up/push down action is very firm and true. Lovely un-worn original big silver plated 'onion' crown. Good original un-worn large silver plated bow. Appraisal;- A very handsome and highly impressive Gentleman's top grade Swiss timepiece which as mentioned earlier was much loved and proudly cared for by the original owner - she will make a perfect gift and a heirloom to be enjoyed by your future generations!
