Antique Victorian Gothic Revival Oak Prie-dieu c.1890

A substantial Victorian Gothic Revival prie-dieu, finely constructed in solid oak, with a distinctly architectural presence. The front elevation is centred by a pierced Gothic tracery panel arranged in a cross-form, with arches and foliate carving worked in deep relief. Above, a carved frieze featuring a winged angel head flanked by scrolling foliage provides a strong ecclesiastical focus with decorative appeal. The sloping reading surface is formed from a single solid oak board, supported by heavy chamfered uprights, all raised on a thick moulded base with kneeling platform. A fine example of Victorian devotional furniture, originally intended for private devotion, it now works equally well as a statement piece in a library, study or living space, where its Gothic detailing and honest construction bring depth and gravitas. The proportions are compact but commanding, and the craftsmanship speaks through the quality of the carving and the integrity of the construction. Presented in very good antique condition with some age-related surface wear consistent with age and use. Structurally solid, reassuringly heavy, clean and ready to place.
