A magnificent pair of large antique Victorian brass fire dogs dating to circa 1880, exceptionally decorative examples displaying all the exuberance and quality associated with the late 19th-century Renaissance Revival period. Each fire dog has an impressive architectural form, surmounted by a beautifully shaped spiral finial above a gadrooned baluster section. The substantial cast brass bases are particularly striking, centred by wonderfully modelled lion masks and flanked by opposing winged horses, their bodies, wings and harnesses finely detailed throughout. The quality of the casting is excellent, with particularly crisp detail to the lion faces, winged horses and decorative foliage. The brass has developed a wonderful mellow golden colour with areas of natural age-related patination, giving them exactly the character one hopes to find on genuine antique fireplace furniture. These are far more elaborate than the more commonly found simple Victorian fire dogs and would make an exceptional statement in a large fireplace, whether used traditionally or simply displayed decoratively.
