Description
Antique original American Waltham Watch Co., 7 jewel Ladies pocket /fob watch with beautiful ivory porcelain dial in a highly polished 9 carat (tested) gold filled (known in the U.K as rolled gold) original Dennison case with very curious inscriptions. C ~1909. Full working order and has been fully checked by my highly experienced watchmaker, guaranteed to be 100% authentic - a timepiece to grace any collection! DIAL;- Impressive and distinctive, high gloss, ivory porcelain dial in very near mint condition - absolutely no hairlines, marks or nibbles and just two extremely tiny (micro) little pin prick black 'specs' showing under eyeglass only at the 3 and 11 positions. Look to be a fault in the original firing process - neither detract but mentioning for accuracy. Signed clearly in bold black very fancy script; Waltham. Bold black Roman numerals with black minute markers, bolder black 5 minute markers and black triangular shaped 15 minute markers to chapter ring. Recessed sub dial with black Arabic numbers and black seconds chapters. Finely cut, original blued steel spade and whip hands and original blued steel arrow tip seconds hand all in lovely straight, unmarked order. Domed crystal in amazing clear, bright condition with no scratches or marks. CASE;- The highly polished (3.5cm diameter / 4.9cm from top of bow to base), 9 carat (tested) gold filled original Dennison case is heavy (has a pleasing solid feel in the hand and total watch weight is 38 grams), robust and in super condition - absolutely no wear or indentations and just overall light an fine little surface scratches (again showing under eyeglass only) commensurate with age and use in her 112 years service. All covers (both inside and out) still retain their original, high gloss, mirror finish. The front bezel snaps on and off correctly, closing tightly with a very reassuring click. The back cover and dust cover are hinged at the 6 position, both open correctly to exactly 90 degrees, again closing tightly and both hinges are true and firm with absolutely no play. Clearly stamped inside the back cover in arched script; STAR (the 'Star' cases are always 9ct gold filled), DENNISON WATCH CASE Co., (Aaron Lufkin Dennison - one of the founding Fathers of the American Waltham Watch Company who moved to England to establish the Dennison case factory) and is numbered; 509290. This number is correctly, partially repeated to the back case curvette and the inside of the bezel lip; 290. Curiously inscribed to the dust cover; SUSAN MAWDSLEY 1888 - 1924 EVAN MAWDSLEY 1910 - JACK MAWDSLEY 1938 - Interesting that the inscriptions where all done at the same time and in the same engravers hand yet Evan and Jack where still alive at this point (Susan would have died aged 36 years). Seems somewhat strange to have this engraving done when two Family members where still alive and that the death of either Evan or Jack where not later recorded on the watch although Jack Mawdsley could still be with us (aged 83 years). The inside of the dust cover (which has one tiny scratch - looks like someone once tested it to see if solid gold) is clearly stamped; ENGLISH MAKE THIS CASE GUARANTEED TO WEAR 10 YEARS and is numbered; 509290 16 - the 16 is the Dennison date numbering system; 1926 which shows the movement is original to the case as it should always be numbered earlier or the same, never after. MOVEMENT;- The stem wound and set, Waltham 7 ruby jewelled, 3/4 fire gilt plate (size; 0, Grade; No.100) lever movement (is in superb bright and clean order and has just been fully checked by my watch repairer. Has a compensated bi-metal balance wheel with brass balance screws and two brass meantime screws (for precision timing), bright blued steel over coil Breguet hairspring, bright blued steel movement screws, ruby end stone and pallet jewels, heavily engraved balance cock, attractive 'swirl' engine turning to the mainspring and ratchet barrel covers and original match highly polished case screws. Clearly stamped on the top plates in arched script; A.W.W.Co. WALTHAM, MASS., and is numbered; 17711677 - dating her to 1909. This number is correctly, partially repeated to the bottom plate (under the dial); 711677 and to the underside of the balance cock; 11677. Balance action is absolutely tremendous in all positions (could not be any better) with a sure, strong positive action. Winds extremely smoothly and fully (do not be afraid to fully wind, over-winding is the greatest horological myth!) Hand set operates smoothly and correctly. Lovely large un-worn gold plated 'onion' crown. Good original gold filled bow (little bit of wear showing from being carried on an Ladies Albertina chain over the years) which is correctly stamped to one side; DQ - Dennison quality. APPRAISAL;- A Ladies very attractive and interesting timepiece - she will make a perfect gift and a heirloom to be enjoyed by your future generations! Ready to wear or display. Will be delivered in a new presentation box as shown and be very securely and safely packed. I always have a good selection of Antique gold filled watch chains listed and in stock which will compliment this watch well - please contact me if you have any specific requirements. *** WILL SHIP WORLDWIDE *** UK - FREE!
