Art Deco Torchère Uplighter Lamp with Petal Bowl Shaped Top

This elegant torchère type floor lamp is of turned and carved wood with a raw textured and lightly lime washed finish. The turned column stands on a base, raised slightly from the floor by shaped feet, and is then completed with a beautifully shaped carved uplighter resembling a petal bowl. Its condition is in keeping with age appropriate wear and use. This would fit in with the décor of any room and bring with it a charm all of its own. It is reminiscent of the style of Serge Roche in some ways when he used ornate styling with his Torchère Lamps. Serge Roche was fascinated with European Rococo furnishings and his conception of original and creative pieces with a strong Baroque feel mean he is much appreciated by interior designers for his use of embellishment and ornament. He specialised in designing furniture, lighting and conversation pieces and his work became extremely fashionable. As the son of a famous art dealer and collector he became well acquainted with many famous artists such as Picasso, Pissarro and Renoir when they visited the family Gallery. The style of Art Deco (abbreviated from the French Arts Décoratifs) is that of visual arts, architecture, and product design. It combined modern styles with fine craftsmanship and rich materials and during its heyday, it represented luxury, glamour, exuberance, and faith in social and technological progress. It started in France in the 1910’s prior to the outbreak of the First World War and continued to flourish afterwards in Europe and the USA throughout the 1920’s and 30’s.
