Description
In General A wonderful opportunity to own a stunning example of the English Arts and Crafts movement in the form of this beautifully designed Hampton Court armchair c.1910 -1912. A Hampton Court armchair in oak with a rush seat is held at the V&A! The Tabard Inn was part of the innovatory Bedford Park Garden Suburb in Chiswick, developed in the 1870s. Designed by the forward thinking and acclaimed Arts and Crafts architect, Richard Norman Shaw, the Inn was furnished with a set of settles and chairs, including this example. The shape of the chair with its back splat and shaped arms, shows the influence of eighteenth-century furniture designs on Arts and Crafts makers. It is thought that this Hampton Court armchair was made and retailed by Morris & Co, founded by William Morris as they illustrated a very similar armchair and side chair in their early 20th Century catalogue. William Birch, a firm of chair makers in High Wycombe, also produced a similar upholstered chair for dining rooms. This Mahogany armchair with turned front legs, square section front and turned side and back stretchers, have an indented back rail and solid splats. *We also have 4 Hampton Court side chairs available* Maker Morris & Co in London and a similar design made by William Birch in High Wycombe Year 1910 - 1912 Material Mahogany Condition In excellent condition with no cracks or restoration.
