Bamboo / Chinoiserie Magazine Rack 1920s

This is a lovely example of a 1920s bamboo magazine rack, with a great rich colour and a nice polish. It is all clean and original with no breaks, repairs splits or pieces missing. It features two holding compartments with a woven ratan base which is also in very good condition (see photo). There are two triangular central panels supported by bamboo diagonals, the front one having black lacquerwork floral chinoiserie decoration, the rear one is plain black; there is a little scuffing on the inside. The four uprights which form the legs splay out slightly towards the bottom. The centre uprights that divide the compartments extend a little further and secure the carrying handle. The compartments are by secured U shaped supports. What is interesting to see is that the magazine rack has retained all six of its original decorated metal end caps. Whereas the handle does flex a little from side to side, the frame is rigid with no rock.
