Behaim or Erdapfel Leather Globe on Mahogany Tripod

A fabulous thing, this terrestrial globe is a version of the Martin Behaim globe, also known as the Erdapfel. The original dates to the 15th century and is the oldest globe known, residing in a Nuremberg museum. Presented here in green leather with beautiful detail and text, it shows a long lost world of mermaids and sailing ships. It is supported by a mahogany tripod frame and has a brass meridian. - Tripod feet with castors. - Brass hour circle at the top with Roman numerals. - Brass meridian ring with Arabic numerals. - Fabulous range of imagery, including mythological beasts, flags, ships, whales & fish. - Zodiacal figures around the circumference. - Gilt areas representing lakes, rivers and seas. - Areas of text, written in German. - At the south pole, a large depiction of a woman with wings and eagle feet and a range of crests.
