Originally conceived in 1974, the illustrations for this range were taken from the book Natural History of British Birds by Edward Donovan, published in 1794. Forty birds were featured in the collection, which was not fashionable in the sense of the following trend, but this probably helped its longevity as it did not date and look old fashioned. More than two dozen different birds adorn the varied pieces in this impressive collection. Exotic hoopoes as well as stately English swans are featured in natural settings on everything from oatmeal bowls to covered casseroles, all of which show the pattern's classic oak leaf and acorn border. Portmeirion makes the high-quality, hand-decorated earthenware safe for the oven, microwave, freezer, and dishwasher, and offers an extensive selection of matching accessories. This piece is in stunning condition and really has kept with age and would make a fabulous decrotive piece. Marked Portmeirion Birds of Britain.
