Description
We present for consideration, this well-proportioned and highly impressive French Boulle striking mantel clock of Louis Xv style, by master clockmaker, Charles Hour of Paris. Hour was a well-respected French horologist who founded the "Just" clockmaking brand in c1875, utilising the ‘Just’ name encased within a circle as his trademark which was stamped into their clock movement backplates. Hour’s earliest clocks also had “C.H. Paris” stamped into the backplates and both can be seen on the backplate of this exceptional clock. Resting on its four cabriole brass feet, this stunning clock with ebonised case, has a glazed frontal aperture mounted in a gilt frame. The clocks elaborate garniture, includes finely engraved Rococo design ormolu scrollwork, (including a masked sun at its top), with further enrichment of red tortoiseshell and gilt Boulle inlay of Arabesque form. At the clocks apex sits a winged Cherub playing a musical instrument. The sculptured gilt cast dial has blue hand-painted Roman numerals, (each numeral set into a white enamelled cartouche), finished with the clocks original blued hands of bespoke design. The dial is then protected by a convex glaze with bevelled edge, mounted in an embossed brass bezel. The clock’s high-quality French 8-day pendulum driven circular movement, has an outside count wheel regulating its striking mechanism and is accessed via its rear hinged and fretted brass door. The backplate is stamped with the Charles Hour trademarks (as highlighted above), along with two serial numbers and the movement strikes the hours and half-hours on its brass ‘ting bell’. The clock also carries forward its star theme, with its original brass sunburst masked pendulum, (having the same serial number as the movement).
