Description
This bell is an early 20th.century buffalo bell from Mandalay, Burma known as hka-lauk. Cast in bronze, it is decorated with a scrolling design on all sides.
These bells were hung around the neck of buffalo to warn other travellers along the narrow mountain passes. They were also used to help farmers locate their animals after being set free to graze.
Rather than dome shaped this is rectangular with closed rings at the top for a rope to pass through.
They have a duller tone than temple bells – more of a comforting clonk than a musical ring.
