Description
Fine French 1960s Bronze Candelabrum / Candlestick in the Manner of Felix Agostini
Conceived in the Brutalist style, this fine candelabrum for four candles of staggered heights is a lovely piece of 1960s design. Manufactured in hammered solid bronze which has attained a fine colour and patination, the four pricket candlestick platforms extend upwards from a flat base supported on four square legs. The bronze has been hammered out by hand and so has tooling marks which add great charm to the planished finish of the piece. The variation in colour across the piece is highly attractive. Making use of the pricket candlestick, a traditional form which was one of the earliest candlestick designs in use in Europe, the piece has simple lines and its modernist aesthetic, combined with the high quality construction and luxurious metal used, makes it a real statement piece.
The design of the candelabrum is attributed to Felix Agostini.
FÉLIX AGOSTINI (1910-1980):
Born in France and trained as a sculptor, Agostini worked in Paris creating illustrations for advertising companies before moving, in the 1950s, in to making designs for lighting. He created his designs in plaster that was later cast in bronze, the metal playing a part in almost all of his designs. Agostini's designs produced between the 50s and the 70s are modern design icons and sought-after by collectors and decorators worldwide.
