This listing is for a superb Burr Walnut and Sold Walnut Davenport Desk after 'Captain Davenport' who commissioned from Gillows at the end of the 18th Century a new type of desk design. Thereafter desks of this design and similar are always known as Davenport Desks. The top with a Gilt metal gallery above a sloping green embossed leather writing surface. The top is inlaid with a very nice marquetry Ebony motif with Satinwood stringing forming a geometric border. The lift up lid and the interior of the top cabinet is lined in Satinwood and there are well made small pigeon storage holes. The lock for this compartment was removed at some time in it's life. With faux drawers to the left and four real drawers to the right with solid walnut handles. All four drawers are lined in light coloured baize and all have the original locks cleaned and fully functioning but with new replacement keys. The top sits on shaped and inlaid supports which are duplicated at the base. The raised center panel of Burr Walnut is inlaid with a marquetry design with a flower and leaf scrolling pattern flowing around the edge. The Davenport sits on concealed casters
Celia Rose Antiques has clarified that the Burr Walnut Inlaid Davenport Desk (LA45058) is genuinely of the period declared with the date/period of manufacture being c.1860 / 1870
In good overall Antique condition, but as an Antique Piece of Furniture it will carry marks from the passage of time. The Leather does have some marks and scuffs but is such a high quality leather I would be reluctant to replace it.
