Campbell-Stokes Sunshine Recorder c.1900

This is a very early and rare Campbell-Stokes sunshine recorder, circa 1880, It is one of the very first of this type as there is little adjustment on the instrument for latitude and it can be reliably referred to as a Mark 1. However, it is suitable for UK latitudes and similarly in corresponding southern latitudes. Consisting of a brass framework and slate base, this instrument is identical to the one purchased from the Kew Observatory in London in 1880 and supplied to the Melbourne Observatory, South Yara, Greater Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. This particular model sunshine recorder played a significant part in the correlation of weather reports for Australia's national newspapers. After 65 years of service it was presented for display in the Victoria Museum in Melbourne. - see pic.  Due to their great age (125+ years) and because these instruments were sited outside many simply disappeared or corroded away, making survivors like this highly collectable.
