Size: 9 cm tall, 8 cm wide. Condition: excellent condition, no chips cracks or restoration. This is a simple small jar, yet with the wonderfully tactile character and deep understanding of the ceramic process which gives early Chinese pottery its appeal. This jar is made in stoneware (although the Chinese tradition would recognise it as porcelain). It is delicately potted, with a shallow turned foot-ring and and turning to the shoulder resulting in a ridge at the half way point. Inside and outside the jar is decorated with a light grey celadon glaze, applied thinly so that it leaves the clay body exposed in places (this was not an issue with stoneware as it is not porous). The base is not glazed and in fact the three points where the glaze is missing at the foot would seem to be where the potter held the jar with three fingers to dip it in the glaze. Where the clay is exposed it has fired to a pinky-brown colour. There are slight imperfections and kiln dust in the glaze which add to the organic character of the pot. This pot probably dates to the Yuan Dynasty, usually treated along with the Song dynasty in pottery terms and just preceding Ming.
