Description
Size: 14.9 cm across rim, 6.9 cm tall. Condition: excellent condition, no chips cracks or restoration. The bowl "rings" nicely. There are two firing flaws which are slightly noticeable, one on the rim and one on the inside of the base. This delightful porcelain bowl bears the six character mark of the Chenghua Emperor (ruled 1464-1487), who presided during the Ming Dynasty over a revival of porcelain manufacture which gave rise to some of the finest imperial porcelains known today. This bowl is painted in Chenghua style with cobalt blue under a transparent glaze with a typical pattern featured the lotus flower. There are also twin concentric rings around the six character mark, the rim and the internal lotus flower design. The glaze is wiped away from the foot, and it thins around the rim. There are many bubbles throughout the glaze, which is typical of such ware. The bubbles canot be seen with the naked eye but they impart a softness to the design, particularly near the rim. There is a tendency on this bowl for the bubbles to concentrate on the outer edges of the cobalt blue lines and areas. Some experts are of the opinion that this tends to indicate an 18th century date (late Kangxi or early Qing, rather than a later date such as the late Guangxu/early Republic era when many wares similar to this bowl were often made).
