Copeland Victorian Wall-hanging Porcelain Plaque Painted by William Yale, Signed c.1870

This very well painted plate is signed by the artist William Yale. The title "Solitude" and the number No179 is painted underglaze on the back, and there are also impressed numbers and the Copeland impressed mark for 1850-1867 (the date of the impressed mark is probably not that helpful as Yale most likely decorated this piece while he was employed at Copeland i.e. after 1869). The charger shows a heron flying over a secluded woodland stream, in muted tones of sepia and blue. The painting is very good quality. The rim is gilded and the reverse shows the porcelain body under a transparent glaze. William Yale was born in Newport, Shropshire in 1843, and was employed by Copeland from circa 1869 to 1883, where he was known for painting marine views and winter scenes. After leaving Copeland, he set up his own studio in Liverpool Road, Stoke-on-Trent, advertising himself as a Tile and Slab decorator.
