This lovely tile is typical of the encaustic floor tiles manufactured by various firms during the Victorian era and used often in church restorations, to replace or supplement original medieval tiles, upon which they were based. The method of manufacture of an encaustic tile is that the pattern is made from a clay of a different colour, applied as a liquid slip into an impressed pattern on the main tile clay. This means that the tile can withstand substantial wear without losing its pattern. This tile is finished with a honey coloured glaze. On the back the tile is embossed with the words "Craven Dunnill & Co Jackfield Salop, 456". Craven Dunnill were a leading manufacturer of tiles of many kinds, and employed some of the top designers of their day. We have a number of these tiles for sale, with the same of similar patterns to this one. They make lovely coasters or can be used in a floor or panel as "jewels" within the overall pattern.
