This impressive vase is made of earthenware and hand-painted with Chrysanthemums in gilt and enamels, with black and gilt Greek style borders, the whole with a very smooth eggshell finish. The underside shows the clay body under a transparent glaze. It is impressed with a plain DOULTONS in serif capitals, a number 12 and another circular impressed mark, and also there is a printed Doulton mark and the painter's cypher. The Doulton marks are uncommon and it is quite likely that is is an early Doulton Burslem production from shortly after they acquired the firm of Pinder & Bourne, which became Doulton Burslem, in 1882.
31.5 cm tall (12.5 inches).
Chester's Farm Antiques has clarified that the Doulton Burslem Large Eggshell Ground Vase c.1885 (LA352902) is genuinely of the period declared with the date/period of manufacture being c1885
At some point someone attempted to drill a hole for a lamp, but they stopped when the hole was still small, though not before the drill slipped causing a graze in the glaze. The hole detracts little from the overall display qualities of the vase. Apart from that, the vase is in excellent condition, no chips, cracks, restoration or significant wear. There are a few craze lines in the glaze around the foot.
