Description
A fine and increasingly scarce early 18th-century English provincial oak bureau, dating to the Queen Anne / early George I period, circa 1710–1725. Crafted in solid oak with pine secondary timbers, this handsome bureau displays the restrained elegance and robust craftsmanship associated with early English country furniture. The bureau features a traditional fall-front enclosing a wonderfully original fitted interior with an arrangement of pigeonholes, small drawers, a central cupboard and two concealed compartments, providing both practicality and period charm. Below the writing slope are two short over two long graduated drawers, fitted with attractive early brass swan-neck handles and matching pierced escutcheons. The bureau stands on shaped bracket feet and possesses a rich, mellow honey-brown patina developed through over three centuries of careful use. Throughout the piece there is clear evidence of traditional hand craftsmanship. The original upper backboards retain visible hand-tool marks, while the secondary timbers display the character and wear expected of a genuine early 18th-century piece. The original iron locks remain in place and are secured with hand-driven nails, and the bureau retains a remarkably cohesive appearance both externally and internally. The fitted interior remains substantially original and offers an excellent amount of practical storage whilst retaining the character and proportions expected of furniture from this period. Its warm colour, untouched surface and honest wear combine to create an exceptionally decorative and functional antique suitable for both traditional and contemporary interiors. A superb example of an early English provincial bureau, offering authenticity, excellent colour and wonderful period character. Presented in good antique condition, commensurate with approximately 300 years of age and use. The bureau retains an excellent colour and patina with expected age-related wear, marks, knocks and surface abrasions consistent with centuries of use. The fitted interior appears substantially original, retaining its original arrangement of drawers, pigeonholes, central cupboard and concealed compartments. The upper rear backboards appear original and display clear hand-tool marks, while the lower backboards have been historically replaced, a common restoration found on furniture of this age. The bracket feet are historic replacements; however, remnants of the original feet remain visible beneath the current feet, clearly illustrating the bureau’s original construction. This represents a long-established repair commonly encountered on early furniture and does not detract from its overall integrity or character. The leather writing surface has been replaced historically and remains in good usable condition. The original iron locks remain in place, and the early brass handles and escutcheons are believed to be original or of the period. The drawers operate well, and the bureau is structurally sound and ready for everyday use. Overall, this is an honest, well-preserved early 18th-century bureau with a wonderful untouched appearance and the character that only genuine period furniture can offer.
