This is a most handsome and desirable early example of a small English provincial writing bureau with a stepped and welled interior. It is made of oak and dates to around the time of George 1st, about 1725 Behind the sloped fall there is a carefully designed and nicely proportioned interior. It has 4 drawers and pigeon holes a central cupboard and a well with a sliding cover. The chest itself stands on its original bracket feet and has 2 full and 2 half width drawers, of dovetailed construction and they all retain their original oak linings. The casing around the drawers is faced with 'double D' mouldings, as is edge of the fall and the top.
Middleton's Antiques has clarified that the Early 18th Century Oak Bureau. Small Size, Step & Well Interior C.1725 (LA227155) is genuinely of the period declared with the date/period of manufacture being Early 18th Century
The handles are very old replacements and there are some old repairs - all sympathetic to the antiquity of the piece. It is presented in very good showroom condition throughout.
