Online only, based in stunning Speyside, Moray, Scotland, we (Mr & Mrs W) are passionate about quality antique items with great design and evident craft, predominantly from the 18th, 19th and early 20th century. In particular, we enjoy period items reflecting the beautiful design and aesthetic changes from the decorative arts, from circa 1850 - 1960. Including the Aesthetic Movement, Art Nouveau, Arts & Crafts Movement (In particular of Scottish origin), Modernism, Art Deco and Streamlining. We also enjoy the great craft and quality construction in folk art and vernacular items from across Europe. In particular, Scandinavian decorative items from the 18th and 19th Century. We enjoy being analytical in our approach and supporting our stock with background research, provenance and history through researching the items, the period, designers and retailers. We often hunt the country from our Scottish location, but routinely search from Lancashire and Yorkshire as well as buying trips further afield to supply items online. We also like to take on items that particularly interest us from earlier periods, dependent on our fascination for an object. We are always learning, and happy to share knowledge gained, so please do get in touch. Thanks for viewing our selection of stock, we are always pleased to see items pass through our hands to new owners and homes as antiques remain a great green recyclable purchase! Description
For sale from W&W Antiques is a decorative and distinctive Georgian era provincial tall back armchair c. 1810-1840. - The attractive and decorative tall backed antique armchair has scroll arms and stepped beehive / bobbin like arm upright sections connecting to the square front legs. It is the tall type of farmhouse, croft or cottage armchair that can be useful in a kitchen corner or against a wall in a hall or corridor. - The tall back is distinctive and the top-rail of the seat back is decoratively finished in a similar manner to some Edinburgh pattern armchairs. - The back also has reeded / brander back type vertical splats (five of them).  The arms are highly decorative with a scroll at the junction with the uprights for the back, a more vigorous decorative scroll at the arm terminus leading to a set of stepped beehive bobbin like sections joingin the square front legs. - The armchair has a wonderful rich colour, patination, wear from use over time and great character. The arms have a lovely sinious curve to them starting and ending with the scrolls, the material used could be birch or softwood with an original stain throughout that has aged rather beautifully and worn from wear. - The origin could be a provincial or vernacular armchair of Scottish origin (similar features are reported on some Scottish birch examples) or Northern England even Wales, and this chair in particular was sourced from a farmhouse in North Yorkshire where it had been for a while. - The armchair is in good solid antique condition. Ready for a new life of great decorative utility as a kitchen armchair in a farmhouse or cottage kitchen or as a beautiful highlight to a hall or room. Free delivery in the mainland UK as priced. International buyers are welcome, but please contact us prior to payment to confirm the additional packaging, insurance and shipping costs by way of acceptance to your country. Purchaser responsible for local import tariffs/fees. If you are interested in multiple items, please contact us for combined postage.
