Penderyn Antiques are a family run business residing in an old Welsh chapel in the heart of the Brecon Beacons National Park. We source and restore a wide range of furniture, antiques, interiors and collectables. We have no specific style that we adhere to, (if we like it, we’ll buy it!) but we do have a keen interest in early Welsh country furniture and unusual decorative items.
At Penderyn Antiques, we express an indebtedness to those nameless joiners who worked with wood so long ago before plastics and the age of automation. For in building furniture with integrity; so that it will last hundreds of years, they have been our mentors. Their work remains a testament to their commitment to their craft and excellence. Wood is the most used of all our natural resources. We have a duty to recycle, reuse, adapt and preserve it. We must use wood to create furniture that has longevity and combat the ‘throwaway’ society…even though it does grow on trees..”

Description
An early 19th-century Welsh oak low linen press cupboard, also known as a Carmarthen coffer. Constructed in solid oak with a rich, deep patina. The upper section is fitted with a pair of panelled cupboard doors enclosing a shelved interior. The doors feature simple Gothic-arched panel detailing, typical of Welsh vernacular furniture of the period. Below, the base comprises a well-balanced arrangement of five drawers, fitted with turned knobs and retaining their original escutcheons. The cupboard stands on bracket feet and is finished with a moulded cornice, giving the piece a strong architectural presence.

condition
In good antique condition, with surface wear and marks consistent with age and use. The oak retains a pleasing, well-developed patina. There are some minor signs of historic woodworm to the back panels; this is long gone and has been treated as a precaution. There are some historic repairs, including replacement beading to the sides beneath the cornice and a historic repair to one drawer front (pictured). There is age-related shrinkage to one drawer, typical of furniture of this age. All doors and drawers open and close well. Structurally solid and sound.
