Description
A charming early 20th century “Wallace” bank of drawers, a practical and highly decorative piece of early office or studio furniture. Constructed in solid pine timber, the cabinet comprises a grid of shallow drawers fitted with decorative brass drop handles and integrated label holders, typical of filing or document storage systems used in offices, libraries, printers’ workshops or artists’ studios during the period.
Inside one of the drawers survives the original printed paper label advertising “The Wallace Cabinet”, illustrating the maker’s modular filing system designed for storing quarto and foolscap documents. This original trade label adds both authenticity and historical interest, giving insight into the cabinet’s intended commercial use and the organisational systems of the early 1900s.
The drawers retain their warm aged timber surfaces and original brass fittings, showing an attractive patina developed through years of use. The sides of the drawers still show remnants of their original covering, which would have helped them slide smoothly within the carcass.
For practical use and longevity, the cardboard drawer bases and rear panel have been sympathetically replaced with plywood, providing additional strength while maintaining the cabinet’s character and usability.
With its generous number of shallow drawers, this piece offers excellent storage for papers, prints, photographs, ephemera, artists’ materials or collectors’ items. A wonderfully functional example of early 20th-century filing furniture that would make a striking addition to a studio, office or interior with an industrial or vintage aesthetic.
