Description
Good-sized Holy Land storage vessel with spherical body and two small strap handles at the shoulders. Decoration comprises a band of prick-dot decoration running just below the rim. Standing on a flattened base. Early Bronze age Palestine: Circa 3100-2900 BC. A good exhibition of such pottery can be seen at the Musee des Beaux Arts, Brussels. Context: Fine pottery of the Near Eastern Bronze Age was developed during the earliest of civilisations which flourished in the barren Bible lands. The peoples of the Early Bronze Age who built the first cities produced pottery, which was beautifully and simply crafted. See item 25 Hands of the Potter Cj Martin. Also item 43 Der Konigs Weg 9000 Jahre Kunst und Kultur, Koln 1987 and chapter 3, Ancient Pottery of the Holy Land: Ruth Amiran.
